The northerners were primarily abolitionists, or people against slavery, the southerners were confederates, or in other words people supporting slavery. of slavery and owned many slaves themselves. The leader of the abolitionists was president Abraham Lincoln. He chose Ulysses Grant to be his general.  The Union was the North and the Confederacy was the South.

Immigration

Immigration to the United States may be divided into two distinct periods. They had distinctive reasons for emigrating from their native lands, and for choosing North America.
ಬೆಫಾರೆ ದಿ ಸಿವಿಲ್ ವರ್, mostly
Immigration is when people move from one country to another. This is what happened in America. The cities were flooded with people. This happened because of the gold rush. The gold rush was when gold was discovered in California. People from every country imaginable fled to America. it was as if the colonial times were repeating. Then with the British, Spaniards, and French and now with people from around the world. Our country was founded by immigrants, but now they were being treated very harshly. Before the civil war immigrants came and were not bothered with. Now the African Americans were free and more people were coming the Americans were desperate to get rid of all these people. They started by not allowing any more Chinese immigrants to come. The immigrants were already miserable, but to make things worse the were discriminated against, The thought they were blessed if anyone in the family went to school.

This land, although the Europeans did not know, was a already claimed by the Native Americans. They payed prices for their freedom. They suffered from famine, death, and fatal diseases. In 1607 England's first permanent colony was built , called Jamestown.many died over the hard winter and of the remaining colonists John Smith convinced them that there was no gold. In 1612 a Jamestown farmer found tobacco which became very popular. Shortly afterward a disease called Tobacco Fever brought many people to their deaths. In 1620 the Mayflower Compact was made. This was a written agreement by a consensus of the new settlers arriving at New Plymouth.
